This group considered two aspects of economics and national security. First, how the trend of increasing globalization, that is international economic integration driven by technology and decentralization, changes the security environment of the United States. This included the shifts in threats and vulnerabilities that globalization induces, as well as the impact on U.S. capabilities to project and sustain power. Second, how economic means and ends interact with more narrowly-defined security issues. Does breaking down the isolation from one another in which economics and national security policies are usually considered by policymakers lead to practical changes in policy? The working group report was released in September 2005.
