  • Stadium Construction: December 1997-March 1998

These photos chronicle Princeton Stadium construction during December 1997-March 1998. Click on any of the previews to see a larger image.

[photo] [photo] By December, the outer wall extends most of the length of the home side. The massive wall's columns are reminiscent of Palmer Stadium, though during construction you can see that the wall is actually hollow. The spaces between the columns alternate between partially-enclosed and open.

[photo] [photo] On the left is a closer look through one of the wall's openings into the concourse. The ramp in the lower portion of the Y-shaped support leads to the top row of the lower deck. In the top foreground is a suspended walkway running through the perimeter of the outer wall; ajoining it is another walkway suspended over the concourse, leading to a portal into the upper deck.

On the right is a look down the home concourse; the seats above you are the upper deck; you can see the suspended walkway leading from the upper portals to the outside wall.

[photo] [photo] Parked outside Jadwin Hall is a section of the outer wall waiting to be hoisted into position. It fits along the top of the wall just beyond the press box; you can see that it's slightly curved. On the right is a view of the home stands from Caldwell Field House; by January the seating for the upper deck is complete.

Fine Tower affords a fine overview of the outer wall. Meanwhile, the Y-shaped supports for the visitor's side have been completed, and several additional sections of that side's outer wall have appeared.

[photo] [photo] The track appears to be almost complete by January; stairs are being installed in the bleachers, and workmen are extending northward the red brick wall separating the track from the Armory parking lot.

Looking across the other end of the track from Caldwell Field House, you can see one of the two tunnel entrances to the football stadium's field level. Above and behind the entrance are the row of Y-shaped supports for the visitor's upper deck. Stairs have been installed on the inside of the outer wall; they lead from the track level up to a door leading into the wall. From there you have access to the suspended walkway running the perimeter of the concourse, or you can continue up the four ramps housed in the outer wall to the very top.

On the left is a view from Peyton Hall; the section of the outer wall extending in toward the top of the upper deck is the bottom of the press box.

With the home seating substantially complete by late January, workmen extend the outer wall toward the closed end of the stadium. From Roper Lane you can see the sections of the outer wall rising in the same place that Palmer Stadium's two towers once stood.

[photo] [photo] There's a good view of Weaver Track from the ramps leading to the top of the football stadium's outside wall. (The ramps are housed inside the wall at both open ends of the horseshoe.) By March, the track is complete, save for the awning over the bleachers. Meanwhile, construction of the football stadium's press box begins.

[photo] [photo] The field could use some grass, but these views from the northwest corner of the lower deck give a good feel for the home side. The stairs have been installed, and the press box is nearly complete. (These photos, and others from inside the stadium on this page, were taken by Band President Ken Lee '98 during a tour.)

[photo] [photo] The outer wall continues to snake its way around the stadium, now arriving at the curved end of the horseshoe. Motorists driving down Roper Lane in February can catch an unobstructed view of Jadwin Gym one last time.

A mild winter seems made-to-order for stadium construction. The visitor's upper deck was completed during February, the outside wall along the home side (seen from Peyton Hall) is nearly complete, and its mirror image on the visitor's side seems to grow daily.

The rightmost photo is from the press box, looking toward the stadium's north end; the lower deck is mostly complete; only the stadium's northeast corner has been left open for construction vehicles.

[photo] [photo] On the left is an up-close and personal look at the seating in the upper deck, a few rows below the press box. The home concourse is on the right, viewed from one of the suspended walkways that connect the outside wall to the upper deck's entrances.
