A New Year of PUG
The PUG blog and parts of the rest of the site have not received as much care and watering as they should have these past few months, so we are in the process of changing that.
- Reformat the navigation so that finding documents and the wiki easier (see those tiny links on the right?)
- Restructure the wiki for easier navigation
- Add introductory materials for new *nix users

Student Activities Fair 2006
As per our usual MO, the PUG will appear at this fall’s Student Activities Fair, this year on September 15 in Dillon Gym. Stop by and show off your sexy *nix setups or to learn more about the group. Also, as we have done in the past, we will distribute copies of The OpenCD.
However, the ISOs on the site are 6 months old and quite dated. So I have taken the liberty of updating the CD with the current versions of programs such as Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird.
One thing I didn’t update, however, is the Ubuntu LiveCD portion. The reason is because I don’t really know how, and I don’t think it’s that critical for people to have the most recent version of a linux distribution if they’re just using it for demonstration purposes, as opposed to installing them on their computers and using them all the time (we hope!).
The updated ISO file and signature files are here, and you can find a copy of my PGP public key here.
Also, I have posted PDFs of the fliers we will be handing out this year. You can find our general introduction to the group here, and our accompanyment to the OpenCD here.

Here are the candidates’ statements in the order I received them:
Bryan Cattle, running for “I guess President would be cool, although I’m open to anything that sounds vaguely impressive–VP, Propaganda Minister, Defender of the Faith, whatever…”
Statement:
Hi there, I’m Bryan Cattle. I run Gentoo, and have run Slackware since seventh grade when a guy promised me a floppy with the full version of Wolfenstein 3d if I could figure out how to install Linux.
Interestingly, I am from Seattle. Specifically, from Woodinville. Woodinville lies on the border with Redmond, which you all will know as the Mecca of worldwide computer degeneracy and racketeering. My parents live in an upscale neighborhood, which means in that area that I have been from childhood surrounded by faceless Microsoft goons of one type or another.
Thus, I guess my primary qualification would be that I have resisted the dark side, despite growing up inside the death star. In addition, I am always willing to debate people the merits of Linux vs. Microsoft in general, which has lead to interesting confrontation when I mow any of the three sides of our lawn that border the residences of overzealous Billy-boy (Gates) Brownshirts. Anyway, I guess President would be cool, although I’m open to anything that sounds vaguely impressive–VP, Propaganda Minister, Defender of the Faith, whatever…
After coming to power, I would like to publicly humiliate one of the fanatics I always see running around in their “Microsoft Intern” shirt/baseball cap/book bag. A public debate might work in lieu of a tar-and-feathering, but it is up to the membership.

Most of you on the list of read some of my postings. But believe me, in spite of the randomness of the posts, I am NOT A SPAMMER. q= Having tried various OSes, I keep an open mind about people’s choices, so I am not just your average linux zealot. I am the guardian of a 15-month-old Gentoo-testing box (which means I kinda like BSD, and lives my life on the cutting edge). Honestly, I don’t have much of an agenda (besides the firm belief that Vi triumps over the evil emacs), and I enjoy helping other people with computer problems. I will try my best to get installFest going next year, and I promise (if someone can provide the costume) I will wear a Penguin suit to SAF to promote the club.
Daniel Peng: (running for President)
As next year’s President, I intend to continue the Princeton Unix Group’s rich heritage of intellectual dialogue and exciting events. I intend to apply my experience as Vice President to make the Princeton Unix Group even bigger and better next year.
