Prelude to Kyoto

Prelude to Kyoto

In December, 1997 the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change sponsored an international conference in Kyoto, Japan that was of much interest to anyone interested in energy and pollution. Princeton Student Pugwash tapped in to some of the excitement this conference generated with a pair of lectures called “Prelude to Kyoto”.

On Wednesday, December 3, 1997, Dr. Jerry Mahlman, director of the nearby Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (an internationally renowned research center), led a discussion on the greenhouse effect and global climactic change.

Then on Tuesday, December 9, Professor Theodore Taylor of Princeton’s Center for Energy and Environmental Studies, and Dr. Rush Holt, the former assistant director of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, led a panel discussion on the future of energy technology. (On November 3rd, 1998, Dr. Holt was elected to represent New Jersey's District 12 in the U.S. House of Representatives. Congratulations!)

Everyone who attended one or both events learned a great deal, and both sessions ended with thought-provoking question-and-answer sessions and dialogues.

We put up flyers advertising the event around campus; you can download one here (Microsoft Word format).
