PURFC Charter

The Princeton University Men's Rugby Club was founded in 1931 by British graduate students, H. Cooper and Monti Barak, and coached to immediate success by Professor John Whitton. The consistent achievement of our sides in competition and the strength of the bonds forged off the pitch are the result of a common set of principles that the club has espoused from its inception, and to which we hold ourselves accountable. Above all, we value the unique physical and mental challenges that the sport of rugby provides for us, and the intense experience of playing it. We have respect for the elements of the game that afford us these challenges: for our opponents; for the rules and the officials who enforce them; for the pitches we play on and for all spectators present; for the club, its history, alumni, and current leadership. We approach the game with joy, feeling gratitude for the privilege of representing our university, our alumni, our teammates and ourselves in such an honest test of mind and body.

Club Policies:

The following specific policies are established to help us adhere to the spirit of the Charter.

•  Dues- $75 per season/ $100 for rookies and players who want shorts and socks. One grace week will be permitted for the payment of dues. If dues remain unpaid, the player will sit out the second game of the season.

•  Pitch- We will leave a pitch, whether our own or an opponent's, only when it is deemed clean

•  Alcohol- The PURFC believes that alcohol has nothing to do with rugby. No alcohol will be permitted at any game or practice.

•  Dress- We will set, and abide by, specific dress guidelines for travel, games, and warm-up

•  Referee- we understand the importance of the referee and will endeavor to be courteous at all times before, during and after our games. Only our captain to speak to him/her during play.

•  Other Team- We will treat any and all opponents with respect and good sportsmanship.

•  Our Team- any disagreements between teammates, with officers or coaches, should be dealt with in private. We need to give our Captain, President, and other officers the support that they deserve. We will have a POSITIVE ATTITUDE during practices and games. A-side players will stay at the pitch for B and C side games.

•  Women's Team- the Women's team is our second favorite one, and we celebrate and support their success.

•  Selection- Coaches will post selections two nights before games (ie. Thursday nights for Saturday games)

•  Attendance/ timeliness/communication- All players are expected to let a coach, or captain, know if they will be late or unable to attend a practice/function/game, and to respond to team e-mails when they are asked to. A-side players will be in jeopardy of losing a starting position should they miss a key practice. B and C side players need to be present on Wednesday at the very least to assure themselves of playing time.

•  Travel- communication is doubly important when we are traveling. President and Captain will coordinate lists/schedules for all overnight travel.

•  Fundraising- Fundraising is a crucial club activity and should be undertaken in the same spirit as any of our other activities.

•  Off-season training- Each "squad" will have a training captain, who will set up training sessions during the off-season, under the guidance of the coaches, Captain and President.

•  Coaches- Our coaches appreciate that rugby is a game of constant decision-making and creativity, and their goal is to provide us the guidance and perspective that we need to meet our goals as a club. The leaders of the club are our Captain and President.
