Benjamin Taylor Collection of Philip Roth Materials (C1609)

Consists of a group of writings and speeches, biographical materials, correspondence, photographs, and medical records of American author Philip Roth (1933-2018) collected by his close friend and literary collaborator Benjamin Taylor (1952- ).

Brendan Behan Papers (C1596)

Consists of selected manuscript and typescript drafts, notebooks, and notes, of 20th-century Irish author Brendan Behan (1923-1964), as well as some correspondence and ephemera. The papers constitute the principal archives of the manuscripts of Behan’s writings.

Ribeiro de Avellar Family Plantation Records (C1605)

Consists of plantation records of the Ribeiro de Avellar family documenting the accounts and operations of their sugar and coffee plantation Pau Grande in the parish of Paty do Alferes, Brazil. Materials include extracts from account books spanning from 1797 to 1810 and correspondence and receipts from the 1830s through the 1850s.

Robert Sewall Browne Letters on Prospecting (C1606)

Consists of letters from Robert Sewall Browne (1866-1904) to his wife Alice E. Gray Browne in Maine, detailing his overland travels and work as a prospector, miner, and rancher in Colorado, Wyoming, and the Yukon Territory from 1896 to 1901.

Scrapbook on Charles Robert Cureton, circa 1837-1849 (C0938 No. 762)

A scrapbook regarding British Army officer Brigadier-General Charles Robert Cureton (1789-1848). Most notably, the volume includes a neat copy of Cureton’s unpublished diary entries documenting his journey to Lahore to escort the commander-in-chief in India, Sir Henry Fane, to the marriage of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s grandson in 1837.

Sophia, Electress of Hanover, Letter Book and Commonplace Book (C1598)

Consists of a letter book with unpublished letters and a commonplace book likely compiled by or for Sophia, Electress of Hanover (1630-1714), granddaughter of James I of England.

Princeton University Players (PUP) Records (AC474)

Princeton University Players (PUP) was formed in 1986 as the only all student-run musical theatre organization on campus, with six productions each season. The Princeton University Players Records consists of programs and posters from 1986-2012, as well the script from their first production.

William Rogers account book of household and personal expenses of Thomas Pownall and others, 1780-1797 (C0938 no. 767)

Consists of a printed copy of “The Man of Pleasure’s Pocket-Book, or the Bon Vivant”s Vade Mecum, for the Year 1780,” completed in manuscript and used as an account book detailing the personal and household expenses kept by British land agent William Rogers. The account book contains manuscript entries regarding the expenses of Rogers’s customers, including Thomas Pownall (1722-1805), the British colonial administrator who served as Lieutenant Governor of the Province of New Jersey (1755-1757), Governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay (1757-1760), and a member of British Parliament (1767-1780).

Charles Ruas Papers (C1372)

Additions to the papers of American author, interviewer, editor, literary and art critic, and French translator Charles Ruas include photographs of Joan Jonas and Rick Turner in Morocco and Tony Smith and Barnett Newman with Seton, Beatrice, and Kiki Smith.

General Manuscripts Miscellaneous Collection (C0140)

Recent additions to this open collection of miscellaneous manuscript materials include correspondence, mostly dating from 1985-1986, between physicist Dan Tsui and his team at Princeton and Ted Moustakas primarily regarding GaAs/AlGaAs; a sharecropping agreement between L. F. Wood of the Mount Hope Plantation in Jefferson County, Mississippi, and fifteen freedmen and freedwomen immediately following the Civil War; a typescript of two chapters from “A Black Artist at Princeton: Conversations with Braveboy Hintzen” by novelist, playwright, poet, and educator Jan Carew (1920-2012); autobiographical notes by Jorge Luís Borges; a typescript of Laure Guille-Bataillon’s French translation of Julio Cortázar’s “Axolotl;” and an 1857 letter from William Henry Channing (1810-1884) regarding his anti-slavery position.

M. L. Parrish Collection of Victorian Novelists (C0171)

Recent additions to this open collection of correspondence, manuscripts, and artwork include two letters from Charles Kingsley (1819-1875), including one to Thomas George Bonney that includes a photograph of Kingsley and his wife and one addressed to “My dear John,”  as well as a letter from William Holman Hunt (1827-1910) to his godson Holman.

Marc Gaede Papers (C1436)

A recent addition to the papers of American photographer, environmental activist, and teacher Marc Gaede include audiocassettes containing source material for the epilogue of Borderlands, and recordings of interviews and public talks given by fellow photographers and associates of Gaede.

Princeton Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual (LGBTQIA) Oral History Project (AC465)

Additional oral histories have been added to this project focused on LGBTQIA alumni and current and former LGBTQIA staff and faculty to learn about their lives, particularly their experiences being LGBTQIA (out and not out) at Princeton, and their perceptions of the climate for LGBTQIA people at Princeton at different points in time.

T. A. Barron Papers (C1522)

Recent additions include additional copies of his books, international editorial correspondence, articles and speeches, fan mail, videos, and correspondence with other authors.

 

Significant revisions to existing finding aids include the following:

Albert Bensoussan Working Files on Latin American Writers (C1561)

Albert Bensoussan is a writer, translator, and professor emeritus of Spanish literature at the University of Haute-Bretagne in Rennes, France. This collection consists of correspondence to Bensoussan from various Latin American authors whose works he has translated. Also included are writings from Bensoussan and others, interview transcripts, typescripts, and collected articles and essays about Latin American authors. The finding aid was updated as part of the incorporation of additional files.

Charles F. W. McClure Papers (C0488)

Charles F. W. McClure (Princeton Class of 1888) was a professor in the Princeton University Department of Biology. His papers consist of letters from numerous biologists and anatomists. Also included are some of McClure’s writings, research and teaching files, diaries, and photographs. Description was enhanced during re-processing.

Charles W. Millard Correspondence (C1504)

Consists of select correspondence, dating from 1946 to 2011, of art historian Charles W. Millard (1932-2017) with artists such as Sir Anthony Caro, Helen Frankenthaler, Carl Chiarenza, Mark Hewitt, Nick George, Jules Olitski, and others. The finding aid was updated as part of the incorporation of additional correspondence.  

Grace L. J. McClure Papers (C0489)

Consists of the selected writings and correspondence of American educator and writer, Grace Latimer Jones McClure. Materials primarily relate to her unpublished book, A Clippership Honeymoon, which centers around the diaries of Malvina “Mallie” McClure, the wife of a mid-19th century New England sea captain. The collection, which only had a partial inventory, was fully processed and the finding aid updated in kind.

New Jersey Miscellaneous Collection (C1351)

Consists of a collection of miscellaneous legal and financial documents, correspondence, and other manuscript materials, assembled from various sources, that relate to New Jersey history or inhabitants of New Jersey from the late 17th century through the mid 20th century. The existing collection-level finding aid was supplemented by a complete folder inventory.

Office of Communications Series 4A: Robert P. Matthews (AC168)

The Robert P. Matthews series contains photographs which were taken by or at the direction of Robert P. Matthews while he was University photographer. A folder inventory was added to the finding aid to provide better access to materials.  

Princeton University Library Collection of Theater Miscellaneous Manuscripts (TC097)

Consists of a collection of correspondence of playwrights, authors, actors and actresses, and theater managers, and other manuscript materials relating to American and English theater (1720s-1970s), which were acquired by the Library from various sources as single items or small file groups. A folder inventory was added to the finding aid to provide better name access to materials created by Truman Capote, Robert Penn Warren, George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, John Wilkes Booth, and Ronald Reagan, among others.

Vardaman Collection (TC089)

Consists of papers of Mansel V. Boyle (1877-1945), a popular vaudeville performer best known by the stage name Vardaman. Active on the vaudeville circuit from 1901 through 1925, Vardaman was billed as a female impersonator, often appearing on programs as “Vardaman, the Gay Deceiver” or “Vardaman, the Auburn-haired Beauty.” Description was enhanced throughout the finding aid.

New Finding Aids for March and April 2018

New finding aids include the following:

Eva Maria Garrick Estate Papers Concerning David Garrick (C1590)

This collection consists of printed material from the estate of Eva Maria Garrick, as well as correspondence, legal and financial documents, notes, manuscript transcriptions of poems, objects, and ephemera concerning her husband David Garrick. A large portion of the material relates to the Garrick’s involvement in theater; Eva Maria Garrick was a popular dancer during the 18th century and David Garrick was an actor, playwright, and theater manager who pioneered a more realistic acting style that deviated from the more ostentatious methods of the time.

First One Hundred Days Collection (AC456)

The First One Hundred Days Collection is a collation of protest material created by members of the Princeton University community in response to the administration of Donald J. Trump, the 45th President of the United States. This collection contains various posters, flyers, photographs, and digital files from the Princeton University community’s participation in campus and national activism efforts.

Françoise Kestsman Durrell Collection of Lawrence Durrell Materials (C1592)

Consists primarily of Françoise Kestsman Durrell’s collection of manuscripts, many of which are unpublished, by British author Lawrence Durrell (1912-1990).

John C. McGowan journal on Baltimore politics, 1859-1861 (B-001190)

Consists of a manuscript political journal of John C. McGowan (1833-1916), a citizen of Baltimore, Maryland, who was a Know Nothing turned Constitutional Union Party sympathizer just before the American Civil War. The journal contains the text of 32 retained letters and roughly 29 distinct journal entries reflecting one perspective on the tumultuous period in Baltimore’s municipal politics and their relation to broader national politics leading up to the election of President Abraham Lincoln in 1860 and the Civil War.

Karađorđević Royal Family Photographs (1597)

Consists of twenty-one early 20th century photographs relating to the Karađorđević royal family of Serbia and Yugoslavia.

Photograph album of the Magin Cigar Company Tobacco Plantation in Cuba, circa 1900 (P-000102)

Consists of a photograph album depicting everyday life at a tobacco plantation in the Caribbean in the early 1900s, most likely the Magin Cigar Company’s plantation in Cuba. The album contains ninety-two original photographs depicting tobacco fields, a drying barn, processing of tobacco leaves, related machinery and equipment, as well as field laborers and plantation managers.

Paul D. Taylor Papers (MC294)

Paul D. Taylor (1939-) is a career Foreign Service official who served as the U.S. ambassador to the Dominican Republic from 1988-1992. The collection documents Taylor’s ambassadorship, his prior role as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs, and his other State Department positions in the form of correspondence, memoranda, and speeches.

General Manuscripts Miscellaneous Collection (C0140)

A recent addition to this open collection of miscellaneous manuscript material related to predominantly American literary, historical, and political figures consists of a working translation of Moby Dick corrected and marked up by French author and translator Jean Giono (1895-1970). This version is a disbound copy of his 1939 French translation, with Lucien Jacques and Joan Smith, used as a corrected, revised proof in preparation for a reprint that was published by Gallimard in 1941.

George W. Storer Brazil Squadron Papers (C1433)

This collection documents the naval career of George Washington Storer (1789-1864). Storer served in the United States Navy as captain, lieutenant, and commander-in-chief of the Brazil Squadron in South America in the mid-19th century. A recent purchase consists of a letter book, which had been separated from the rest of the papers, containing copies of Storer’s outgoing correspondence between July, 13, 1847, and July 9, 1849, regarding naval operations and the activities of the U.S.S. Brandywine.

Robert H. Taylor Collection of English and American Literature (RTC01)

A recent addition to this open collection of manuscript material related to English literature from the fourteenth century to the 1940s consists of a bound early manuscript copy of Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s play “The School for Scandal,” circa the early 1780s.

Roberto González Echevarría Collection on Severo Sarduy and Other Latin American Writers (C1543)

Recent additions to this collection of Cuban-born critic and professor Roberto González Echevarría’s correspondence, typescripts, audio recordings, photographs, and printed materials regarding Severo Sarduy and other Latin American authors include a letter from Alejo Carpentier to Araceli García Carranza and photographs of Roberto González Echevarría, Severo Sarduy, François Wahl, and Elizabeth Burgos.

 

Revisions to existing finding aids include the following:

David Hosack Family Papers (C0687)

This collection consists of correspondence, deeds, indentures, wills, maps, printed materials, and other assorted family papers related to estates and land owned by American physician, botanist, and educator David Hosack (Princeton Class of 1789) and his family. Many of the papers concern land in the Lackawanna River valley of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Description was enhanced to include additional names of correspondents and other information at the file-level.

New Finding Aids for February 2018

New finding aids include the following:

Journal of the Expedition Down the River Ohio Under the Command of his Excellency John Earl of Dunmore Lieutenant and Governor General of his Majesty’s Colony and Dominion of Virginia, 1774 (C0938 No. 752)

Consists of a manuscript journal documenting the expedition of John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore (1732-1809), then the British royal governor of the Colony of Virginia, to the Ohio Valley against a Shawnee-led coalition of American Indian nations, including the Mingo, in order to extend the western border of the colony. This record of Lord Dunmore’s War, presumably kept by one of the governor’s aids, details the period from September 10th to November 18th, 1774. The journal includes entries describing military maneuvers, including a fold-out chart illustrating the line of march of Dunmore’s force, as well as the proceedings of meetings and exchanges of prisoners between colonial and indigenous leaders.

Margaretta K. Mitchell Working Files on Ruth Bernhard (C1591)

Consists of photographer Margaretta K. Mitchell’s working files on the life and work of Ruth Bernhard (1905-2006), a German-born American photographer known for her black-and-white still lifes and female nudes. The working files contain research materials, drafts, and recordings and transcripts of interviews for Mitchell’s biography of Bernhard, Ruth Bernhard: Between Art and Life (2000); drafts of Mitchell’s essays that appeared in Ruth Bernhard’s book The Eternal Body (1986); as well as correspondence, proofs, financial documents, and publicity materials related to both projects.

Percival W. Petch Papers (C1584)

Consists primarily of an unpublished manuscript, dating from 1917 to 1919, along with clippings and a few original photographs documenting the experiences of Percival William Petch (1886-1940), a British army officer who was stationed along the Macedonian Front during World War I.

Ricardo Piglia Papers (C1513)

Ricardo Piglia was an Argentine author and professor emeritus of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Cultures at Princeton University. His papers contain handwritten and typewritten drafts of his writings, diaries and journals, notebooks, loose handwritten research notes, teaching files, correspondence, and personal photographs.

Walter Dundas Bathurst Papers (C1588)

Consists primarily of three diaries that William Dundas Bathurst (1859-1940) kept while serving as an officer of the Association Internationale du Congo (AIC) from December 1883 to September 1886.

Recently added to this open collection of manuscript material is a minute book documenting the meetings of the Board of Managers of the Children’s Home in Princeton, New Jersey, during the Civil War.

Modern Greek Studies Association Archives (C0821)

A recent addition to this open collection of the records of the Modern Greek Studies Association includes various administrative and financial records, dating from circa 1968 to 2014, including files and materials related to symposia and the association’s official publication, the Journal of Modern Greek Studies.

Princeton University Library Collection of General John Ross Delafield Family Materials (C1508)

Recent additions to this assembled collection of materials related to the Delafield and Livingston families include an 1834 letter from Edward Livingston (1764-1836) to Henry Dilworth Gilpin (1801-1860) and a group of family papers, including correspondence, photograph albums, and documents assembled by Harriet Cecil Delafield, the daughter of Major General Richard Delafield (1798-1873).

Princeton University Library Collection on Slavery in the Americas (C1210)

A recent addition to this open collection of documents related to slavery, the slave trade, and colonial plantations, is an indenture recording the sale of the Mount Charles Plantation in Saint Thomas Parish, Jamaica, to Sir Henry Clinton (1738?-1795).

Richard Schechner Papers and The Drama Review Collection (TC071)

A recent accrual to the papers of Richard Schechner consists of five cartons of additional files related to the theater group East Coast Artists. These files include correspondence, business and administrative records, photographs, programs, and other materials.

New Finding Aids for December 2017 and January 2018

New finding aids include the following:

Estillac Plantation Records (C1586)

Consists of over sixty letters and related documents concerning the Estillac sugar plantation in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (now the Republic of Haiti) from the late 1750s through the early 1780s. Many of the letters are addressed to A. Mabille, a Paris-based hatter, trustee, and creditor, and pertain to the operations and troubled finances of the plantation under the management of Guillaume Claude Besson and Jean Guillaume Robillard.

George Laub album documenting an attempted train robbery at Bearmouth, Montana (C0938 No. 746)

Consists of a scrapbook album documenting an attempted train robbery at Bearmouth, Montana, on May 27, 1905. The album was compiled by Northern Pacific Railway expressman George H. Laub, who was hailed as a hero after he foiled Clarence B. Young’s attempt to rob the express car of the North Coast Limited Train after dynamiting the car.  Laub’s album provides a detailed account of the attempted heist, including photographs of the damaged express car and the exploded safe, congratulatory telegrams and letters, accounts of the hold-up, and newspaper clippings.

Irving Malin Papers (C1587)

Consists primarily of correspondence with authors such as Gordon Lish, James Purdy, Cynthia Ozick, and Paul Bowles, among many others, along with some writings and publisher files of American literary critic and professor of literature Irving Malin (1934-2014).

James Baldwin Playboy Interview (C1557)

Consists of sound recordings, a transcription, and editorial notes documenting an interview of American writer James Baldwin conducted by Alex Haley (1921-1992) and Jim Goode (James A. Goode, d. 1992) in late 1967 and early 1968 for Playboy but never published in the magazine. The interview is conversational and wide-ranging, with Baldwin responding to questions about his personal and artistic life, as well as about larger social issues surrounding racism, sexuality, politics, economics, and activism. Digital access copies of the recordings are available for access in the RBSC reading room.

Simeon Johnson Papers (C1589)

Consists of papers of Simeon Johnson (1770-1807), an American merchant residing in Gonaïves, Haiti, following the Haitian Revolution, including a journal about the conflicts between rival Haitian leaders Henri Christophe (1767-1820) and Alexandre Pétion (1770-1818), as well as legal documents signed by Henri Christophe and Jean-Jacques Dessalines (1758-1806) and financial documents and correspondence pertaining to Johnson’s business and social affairs. This accession was separated from the Princeton University Library Collection on Slavery in the Americas (C1210), formerly known as the Miscellaneous Slavery Collection, during 2017 reprocessing and described as a separate collection.

Thomas Edwin Mills California Gold Rush diary (C0938 No. 749)

Consists of a manuscript diary of Thomas Edwin Mills (1824-1887) describing his 1852 journey from Dunbarton, New Hampshire, to San Francisco, California, by way of Nicaragua, as well as his experiences as a gold miner in Marysville and Nevada City, California, during the California Gold Rush. The journal spans the period from January to November 1852, with more detailed entries documenting the months preceding and during his journey to California followed by sparser entries from his time as a gold miner, which indicate days he spent on his claim and amounts of gold mined. Mills traveled to California via Cornelius Vanderbilt’s Accessory Transit Company, which capitalized on the gold discoveries in California by transporting immigrants between New York City and San Francisco.

Princeton University Library Collection of Sir Walter Besant Correspondence (C0708)

A recent addition to this open collection of the correspondence of English novelist and historian Sir Walter Besant (1836-1901) include seven letters from Besant (1836-1901) to various individuals, two of which are pasted inside volumes of Besant’s works, London and Reading in Rabelais. Also included are two images of Besant on ephemeral items.

Susanna Moore Papers (C1381)

A recent accrual to the papers of American novelist Susanna Moore includes additional correspondence from 2017, a notebook containing notes for her novel In the Cut, and a copy of Halekulani: A Gracious History (2004).

T. A. Barron Papers (C1522)

A recent accrual to the papers of American writer of fantasy literature, books for children and young adults, and nature books T. A. Barron includes additional international editions of his books, articles and speeches, and personal correspondence.

Leonard L. Milberg ’53 Collection of Manuscripts, Correspondence, and Photographs (C0962)

A recent addition to this open collection of manuscript material related to the print collections of Leonard L. Milberg (Princeton Class of 1953) is a press release from the Zionist Organization of America of “Plans of Justice Brandeis For Constructive Work in Palestine” (October 1920), likely the first printed appearance of Louis D. Brandeis’s full memorandum.

 

Revisions were made to the following finding aids:

Princeton University Library Collection on Slavery in the Americas (C1210)

Consists of an open collection of documents related to slavery, the slave trade, and the colonial plantation economy, particularly in the United States, the Caribbean, and Brazil in the 18th and 19th centuries. Description was enhanced throughout the finding aid, and materials that were not appropriately contextualized in a collection of slavery records were removed and placed into separate collections.

New Finding Aids for November 2017

New finding aids include the following:

Antoine Guerry Duclaud Papers (C1585)

Consists of correspondence and documents of Antoine Guerry Duclaud, a French officer employed by the Dutch West India Company who deserted and settled in the Dutch colony of Surinam (now the independent Republic of Suriname) in 1771. The papers document Guerry Duclaud’s move to Surinam with the intention of starting a plantation, his business renting the labor of enslaved Africans he brought from Guinea, and his return to Europe in 1775 after failing to make a profit. This collection offers insights into Dutch trade, economic conditions, the institution of slavery, and resistance to slavery by maroon communities in Surinam in the 1770s.

George S. Rigby, Jr., Collection of Anthony Trollope (C1582)

Primarily consists of correspondence of Anthony Trollope and various associates/family members, as well as other miscellaneous documents. The letters are mainly business-related in nature and discuss various aspects of the literary and publishing world. Notable correspondents include author Thomas Hughes, publisher Nicholas Trübner, journalist George W. Smalley, Russian novelist Ivan Turgenev, and the Scottish novelist Margaret Oliphant Wilson Oliphant. An unfinished holograph manuscript of Trollope’s 1860 novel Castle Richmond, and a manuscript leaf of an article written by Henry James discussing Trollope (and later published in The Century Magazine, July 1883) are included as well.

 

New additions to existing collections were added to the following finding aids:

Toni Morrison Papers (C1491)

A new accrual from the author includes additional drafts and notes for Toni Morrison’s 2015 novel God Help the Child. This material will be available via access to digitized surrogates in the RBSC reading room pending digitization. Description was also added for additional digital files extracted over the summer from previously unreadable floppy disks using new digital processing tools.

Princeton University Library Collection of Modern Greek Materials (C0958)

A recent addition to this open collection of miscellaneous Modern Greek manuscripts is the diary of Prince Nikolaos of Greece (1872-1938) documenting his travels to Peloponnese and Aetolia-Acarnania in April and May of 1898.

Princeton University Library Collection of Booth Tarkington Materials (C0717)

A new addition to this open collection of miscellaneous letters and memorabilia of American novelist and dramatist Booth Tarkington (1869-1946) is a 1924 letter from Tarkington to Robert Underwood Johnson (1853-1937) regarding politics and Tarkington’s upcoming travels. (The Manuscripts Division also holds the Booth Tarkington Papers.)

Princeton University Library Collection of Patrick Henry Materials (C1165)

A recent addition to this open collection of selected manuscript material by and about American attorney, politician, and planter Patrick Henry (1736-1799) consists of a 1795 letter from Henry to Major-General Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee III and an engraved portrait of Henry.

Princeton University Library Collection of Western Americana Miscellaneous Manuscripts (C1446)

A recent addition to this open collection of miscellaneous letters, documents, and other items pertaining to the history of the American West and Southwest consists of two letters from Silas Patterson to his brother Robert Patterson in Washington County, Pennsylvania, during Silas Patterson’s emigration west. The letters are written from Rock Bluff, Nebraska, on February 9, 1865, and Bitter Creek, Wyoming, on August 24, 1865.

A new addition to this open collection of photographs of the Trans-Mississippi West consists of an 1881 photograph by Levi V. Bean depicting Ephraim M. Epstein and his party departing the First Baptist Convention in the Dakota Territory. Epstein was a Russian-born American who migrated to the United States at the age of 20 and became a Baptist minister after converting from Judaism to Christianity; he was also a physician, and later became the first president of the University of Dakota, now the University of South Dakota, at Vermillion.

Robert H. Taylor Collection of English and American Literature (RTC01)

Recent additions to this open collection of manuscripts, letters, and documents of numerous English and American authors and artists include a letter from Baroness Anne Isabella Milbanke Byron (1792-1860) to her friend “Emily”; and an 1873 letter from Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909) to Theodore Watts-Dunton (1832-1914).

Princeton University Library Collection of Blanche Pauli Materials (TC054)

Recent additions to this assembled collection of materials by and about American singer, actress, and vaudeville performer Blanche Pauli (born Virginia C. Taney) include additional photographs, correspondence, clippings, and memorabilia related to her life and professional career. Pauli worked mainly in stock companies touring the northeastern United States and Canada from the late 1890s through 1904. The collection provides a glimpse into the life of a regional vaudeville performer at the turn of the century, as well as documentation of the songs and plays common among vaudeville and minstrel performers in the late 19th and early 20th century. Description was enhanced throughout the finding aid during the processing of new additions.
