Welcome to the Department
of Rare Books and Special Collections' self-guided Research Tutorial. This
tutorial discusses the nature of primary research and the methods and procedures
through which it can be carried out productively. Divided into three sections,
Getting Started, Finding Sources, and Tips For Access and
Use, the tutorial is primarily designed for new researchers or researchers
unfamiliar with the policies and resources of the Department.
As part of its public service, the Department offers research orientation
sessions for classes interested in its collections Presentations may be
conducted by staff members who work with the collections or by the instructor
with help from staff members. Courses that focus on departmental collections
are permitted to meet in designated classroom space. Materials used by such
classes can be held in the reading room for long-term consultation. A
classroom registration form must be submitted well in advance of use.
