The U.S. import and export data were originally compiled by Robert Feenstra of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) under a grant from the National Science Foundation. The processed data sum across U.S. ports and modes of transport and are reported according to the Harmonized System (HS) classification. The construction of the data is discussed in detail in the NBER Working Papers listed below. For more recent years, the U.S. import and export data have been compiled by Peter Schott.
