Jewish Rites

LC practice had been to subdivide the headings for Jewish rites by " --Liturgy" or  "--Customs and practices."
These subdivisions free-float under the heading for Judaism in  accordance with to SCM H1185; however, while the free-floaters listed in H1185 may be applied to sects and denominations, they are not valid under rites.

LC   lists  different  rites  under  Judaism,  for  example,  "Judaism--Aleppo rite."  Does this refer only  to prayer rites or
 to customs as well?

Subject Cataloging Manual,  H  1185  Pattern  Headings: Religions,  authorizes the use  of  the free-floating subdivisions "--Customs and practices" and "--Liturgy" under religions and sects, but not under rites.  (A footnote in H 1185 specifies that "--Liturgy" is to be used in place of "--Rituals" under Judaism.)

In  accordance  with  H  1185,  the  subdivision  "--Customs  and practices" under "Judaism--(Named rite)"  is  not authorized  and will therefore be  removed  from  existing bibliographic records, with  the understanding  that "Judaism--(Named rite)"  refers  in general to customs and practices.  For example,  "Judaism--Sephardic rite--Customs and practices" will  be changed
to "Judaism--Sephardic rite."

The footnote authorizing the use of "--Liturgy" under Judaism and Jewish sects  will  be expanded to  include Jewish rites, thereby validating  LC  current  practice  with   respect   to  liturgy. Therefore,  headings  such  as "Judaism--Sephardic rite--Liturgy" will remain unchanged.

A suggestion to expand H1185 to include rites was not accepted, but footnote 2 was changed to allow the use (only) of "--Liturgy" under the headings for Jewish rites.  Therefore, "Judaism--[named rite]--Customs and practices" is not valid.
For example, "Judaism--Sephardic rite--Customs and practices" should be "Judaism--Sephardic rite," with the understanding that "rite"  means "customary practice."

As for geographic subdivision for Judaism--Customs and practices.":
In accordance with SCM  H  870, Interposition of  Geographic Subdivisions,  geographic subdivision is already permitted for "Judaism--Customs and practices" in that the  heading  "Judaism"  is  designated  "May  Subd  Geog,"
e.g. "Judaism--Morocco--Customs and practices."
