Shortened Date

Question: I am seeing more and more books where date of publication (or copyright) appears in a book as '01.
Should we transcribe it in the 260 field  as is or should it be something  like "'01 [i.e. 2001]".

Answer: The rule that seems to come closest to dealing with this is 1.4F2, which says that if the date on the piece is known to be incorrect, to provide the correct date in brackets. Since '01 is not a correct date, if only because it is not a complete date, so I advocate putting "$c'01 [i.e. 2001]."
