![]() Een gezellige middag in Naples with Marcel Zijlstra, my conscience in all matters of the faith. The word gezellig is essentially untranslatable, because the experience is essentially Dutch: if you gotta ask, you’ll never know. Part of the trick, though, is periodically agreeing, at the right moments, how gezellig a time we are having. Marcel and I go back almost thirty years, ever since we both enrolled as students in musicology at the University of Amsterdam in 1979. Remember to ask Marcel to tell you the story of our first encounter, which he will gladly do—I’ll never hear the end of it. |
