Research Highlights
I am with Princeton University as an Associate Research Scholar, working with Prof. Mung Chiang, and co-founded the Princeton EDGE Lab in 2009, as the lab's first Associate Director. The EDGE Lab had its first EDGE Lab Open House on April 28, 2011, and also hosted the first Smart Data Pricing (SDP) Forum at Princeton University in July 2012. I lead the DataMi project team, which develops SDP solutions to help Internet Service Providers (ISPs) meet the increasingly untenable demand for mobile data. DataMi's consumer facing app, the DataWiz app on iOS, has been downloaded more than 130,000 in its first few months of release. I also lead a project team creating a non-profit, next generation online learning platform, called 3ND (3 Nights and Done). 3ND aims to improve very low course completion rates (less than 3%), popularly observed in popular MOOCs, through introducing short, self-contained course units (we call "3nighter") and giving regular incentives to maintain students' interest and momentum. Each 3nighter can be completed in 3 hours over a few days, providing students with a sense of urgency and a feasible path to learn on their own time without sticking to a university course calendar.
Before coming to Princeton, I was part of TCP research team, invening a new TCP congstion control protocol CUBIC, and was the primary engineer pushing it into Linux kernel 2.6.18 in 2006. Since 2006, CUBIC has been the default TCP algorithm for Linux and are currently being used by more than 40% of Internet servers around the world and by several hundres million Android/Linux users for daily Internet communication. Recent measurement study shows BIC/CUBIC ranks top with 44.51% website using it, followed by Windows' CTCP with 10 to 19% (See Lisong's recent work). The latest CUBIC implementation in the Linux kernel is available at LXR and you can see the corresponding internet draft, paper, experimental results and recent improvement. I am still maintaining and improving the code. My research focus has been on designing, evaluating and improving the performance of CUBIC, and this work was part of my Ph.D. dissertation at NCSU, advised by Prof. Injong Rhee.
