In 2004 the Society for Comparative Research maintained an active schedule of activities including its annual graduate student retreat and its presentation of the Lipset and Dogan Prizes for the best book and dissertation in the fields of comparative research.  Congratulations to Carles Boix (University of Chicago), Evan Lieberman (Princeton University), and Nina Bandelj (UC Irvine) for their superb work that garnered these awards.

These activities would be impossible without the untiring work of the prize committees, conference organizers and faculty discussants at the retreat. Akos Rona-Tas produced a a marvelously organized retreat. I am also indebted to Gary Marks, Susan Stokes, and Colin Crouch for their work on the Dogan Prize, and to Michael Hechter, Rebecca Emigh, and Ian Lustick for their work on the Lipset Prize. The activities of committees like these collectively advance the research program of the comparative social sciences. These invaluable efforts benefit us all in our individual endeavors, maintain the profile of comparative research, and underline the importance of a global perspective on social and political problems.

Sincerely,

Bruce Western
