The 2004
Graduate Student Retreat was held May 14 and 15 at the University
of California, San Diego. Organized by Akos Rona-Tas, the program
for the retreat consisted of 45 papers. Participation was enabled
by travel and accommodation grants for the student presenters
funded by UCSD’s Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic
Affairs and the Institute for International and Comparative Area
Studies.
Student
presenters came from Europe and all over the United States. As in
past years we are indebted to the participation of faculty
discussants. This year, a strong UCSD contingent of faculty
discussants included Rona-Tas, Gary Cox, Matt Shugart, Martha
Lampland, Steph Haggard, Jeff Haydu, Carlos Waisman, Rick
Biernacki, Paul Frymer, and John Skretny. Nina Bandlej (UC Irvine)
also chaired several panels.
