Medieval literature is replete with heroes who try their wit and valor in battle against monsters. Reading masterpieces of medieval literature and modern transmogrifications of them in fiction and film (like The Hobbit and Alien), we will explore what moral and institutional problems pit shield-maidens, knights, and warrior-kings against their dragons, giants, and aliens. Why are these battles staged in weird places? Does "good" always win? Are these conflicts between opposites or conflicts within them?
This site makes extensive use of Adobe Acrobat PDF files. You will need the Acrobat Reader to view these. If your system does not already have the Reader, you can download it from the Princeton site.
