Supported Courses | CP for Courses
The Council on Science and Technology is pleased to announce a new initiative to support the planning and operation of new or upgraded science and technology lab courses intended primarily for non-scientists. This Call for Proposals invites faculty members in Science and Engineering to propose new or upgraded lab courses in their field or in an interdisciplinary area, that will enhance the science and technology education of non-science students at Princeton University. The goal is to provide high-quality, innovative and exciting lab courses that satisfy the science distribution requirement and that will reach a large number of students. This new initiative will help support the planning and sustained operation of such courses for the first five years.
Successful proposals will receive support for up to a five-year period, with a progressive shift toward full departmental responsibility for the course at the end of the award. In the first through fifth years, the level of Council support will decrease from 100% to 80%, 60%, 40%, and 20%, respectively; the departmental responsibility will increase correspondingly. The awards will typically range from $50,000 to $150,000 for the five year period.
All proposals must include a clear description of the proposed course (new or upgraded), and a detailed budget for the continuing operation of the course (which may include design and development, consumable materials, equipment, hardware and software, and personnel). Departments will commit to full responsibility for the course by the end of the five-year period. In addition, proposals must indicate the measures of the course's success upon which continuing annual support within the five-year period will be contingent. These might include level of enrollment, student and teacher evaluations, faculty commitment to teach the course, etc.
All proposals should be sent to Carol Prevost, 5 Peyton Hall, by February 1, 2008. Proposals will be reviewed in the winter, and announcements of successful awards will be made in the spring for funding beginning July 1, 2008. We will be happy to discuss plans for proposals with you and can be reached at the telephone numbers listed above or by e-mail (epaine@princeton.edu or neta@astro.princeton.edu).
