Dr.
Giammar
earned his Ph.D in Environmental Engineering Science from Caltech in 2001. He also received his M.S. at Caltech, and prior to moving to California in 1996 he received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. At Princeton, he is involved in teaching Introduction to Environmental Studies(Env201), an interdisciplinary course offered as part of the Princeton Environmental Institute's Environmental Studies certificate program. A course with students primarily from disciplines outside of science and engineering, Env201 presents the challenges of teaching science to non-scientists and integrating scientific, technological, social, economic, and political aspects of environmental issues. In Env201, Dr. Giammar teaches four precept sections, assists with a laboratory section, prepares problem sites, and is coordinating the class project. He has also presented several lectures to the class.
Dr. Giammar's research is part of the Carbon Mitigation Initiative (CMI), a large interdisciplinary research program investigating strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As a member of the CMI aquifer storage group, Dr. Giammar studies the chemical reactions which occur when carbon dioxide is injected in deep saline aquifers. Dr. Giammar works with laboratory systems built to emulate the high pressure and temperature conditions encountered in deep aquifers. Together with his research mentor Satish Myneni, Dr. Giammar applies chemical spectroscopy and electron microscopy techniques to the examination of minerals subjected to dissolution at high pressure, temperature, and carbon dioxide fugacity.
