Dr. Andrew J. Guswa
is a post-doctoral fellow with joint support from the Council on Science and Technology and the Princeton Environmental Institute. He received his M.S.C.E. and Ph.D from Stanford University in the Environmental Fluid Mechanics and Hydrology Program, where he taught courses in hydrology and water resources and conducted research on modeling the transport of dissolved substances in groundwater. He received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University in 1994, and now has returned to the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering to work with Professor Michael Celia with whom he did his undergraduate thesis.
This year, Dr. Guswa has worked with Prof. Celia and Dr. Rodriguez (from the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department) to develop a laboratory component for ENV 201: Fundamentals of Environmental Studies. This course is offered by the Princeton Environmental Institute and covers the topics of population, water, land use, and energy. The addition of a laboratory has led to a tripling of enrollment in the course, and the students are enjoying the hands-on experience. Dr. Guswa also leads precepts for the same course, integrating scientific concepts with discussions of policy and ethics.
Dr. Guswa's current research focuses on two applications of modeling fluid flow in porous media. One effort involves investigating the interactions between the temporal variability of rainfall, the movement of water through soil, and its uptake by plants. He is working with Professors Ignacio-Rodriguez-Iturbe and Michael Celia on this project. Dr. Guswa is also involved in the new Carbon Mitigation Initiative started under the Princeton Environmental Institute. Under this project, Dr. Guswa will join a diverse team of scholars investigating the feasibility of sequestering carbon dioxide in reservoirs deep beneath the earth's surface.
