House Passes RPS and Solar Tax Credit

 Today the House of Representatives passed the 15% by 2020 Renewable Portfolio Standard (see article here), so now the Senate and House will decide what they send to the Presidents desk, and then Bush will decide whether he wants to veto support for renewables and the closing of a tax loophole that oil companies have enjoyed worth billion$. Princeton Representative Rush Holt supported the RPS.

Managing Your Career Event

 Peter C. Goldmark Jr., who currently directs the Climate and Air program at Environmental Defense and teaches Public Management at the Woodrow Wilson School, will be lecturing on “Managing Your Career” this Thursday night in Robertson Hall. It promises to be entertaining and very informative.

HUGHES TO PLANT ELM TREES IN WEST WINDSOR

 TRENTON, N.J.‹Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes will assist in planting 10 elm trees tomorrow, April 20, at 10:30 a.m. on Washington Road.

 Hughes will join West Windsor Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh, staff from Princeton University, members of the U.S. Olympic Rowing Team, representatives from Home Depot, and representatives from Georgia-based Riveredge Farms. Riveredge Farms donated the trees.

 The new trees are cuttings from the elm tree located in the cemetery on Witherspoon Street in Princeton. The ³Princeton Elm² is disease-resistant. They are being planted along Washington Road in honor of Earth Week (April 16-20) and to replace trees removed due to disease. The plantings also fall under the auspices of the Washington Road Elm Trust, which helped dedicate the street as a National Historic Landscape.

 Home Depot is marketing this strain of elm tree nationwide.


Supreme Court Gives EPA Authority to Regulate CO2!

 The Supreme Court decided, 5-4, that the Clean Air Act gives the EPA authority to regulate carbon dioxide. This helps toward classifying carbon dioxide as an official pollutant and opens the door for us to develop optimal GHG reduction policy federally that has the full institutional backing of the EPA staff behind it. It paves the way for current legislation on the table such as Sanders-Boxer, S 309, to move forward and help prevent mitigation-lite. More info here.

Governor Corzine Commits to GHG Reductions!

 Governor Corzine sent a message (consistent with Schwarzenegger of CA) that US states can lead the country to reduce GHG emissions to levels that can stabilize our global climate (80% below current levels by 2050, though CA's goal is 80% below 1990 levels). The press release can be found here.

Lunch Talk on GCC and Inuit Populations

 There will be a lunchtime talk on Climate Change and impacts on Inuit populations in Canada next weel. The time will be 12:15pm next Wednesday, December 13, 2006. Look for more publicity and information soon.

Letters to the Editor

 Send out a Letter to the Editor to encourage Governor Corzine to advocate that NJ reduce its emissions by 70% by 2050, and help get the legislature on board for passing Global Warming Response Act. A sample letter can be found here.

Pull the Plug Campaign kicks off!

 The new campaign to "Pull the Plug on Global Warming" kicks off today. The campaign aims to enlist as many students as possible to turn off their lights, turn down their thermostats, and unplug their appliances over break. For more on the campaign, visit the projects page.
