Trenton Area, NJ
The trip offers students the opportunity to gain a better understanding of pressing issues of hunger in the United States, which have become especially salient as we face a deepening recession. Through direct volunteering and by meeting and dialoguing with community members, organization leaders and activists committed to finding sustainable solutions to this problem, the group will gain valuable on the ground experience with the effects of this growing problem. The students will be staying in their dorms at Princeton and will drive down to Trenton every day to volunteer during the day time at different food pantries throughout Trenton, and in the afternoon and evening will have discussions and guided reflections with the group and community partners.
Trip Dates: Monday, March 16 - Friday, March 20
The Multi-faceted Path to Recovery in New Orleans
This volunteer service spring break trip will take a comprehensive look at disaster recovery and redevelopment in post-Katrina New Orleans. Since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, recovery activities have occurred on a variety of policy fronts, including housing, social services, education, environmental justice, economic development, real estate, and health. In order to better understand and contribute to the city’s recovery, students will volunteer with several different groups within these areas. Volunteer activities will include assisting with services at a women’s shelter, working to combat environmental degradation, collaborating with neighborhood disaster and community development groups, and community mapping. The group will also meet and talk with a variety of players in the recovery process and spend time experiencing the unique culture of New Orleans.
Trip dates: Saturday, March 14 - Friday, March 20
