[CA 2009 Print Brochure]
[Groups]
- Required Reading: All CAers should read Going Public: an Organizer’s Guide to Citizen Action, by Michael Gecan before arriving for CA. This book will be the basis for several discussions during CA. It should be available in book stores and online (currently $10.36 on amazon.com) as well as from your public library (you are not required to purchase it, just to read it).
Basic Items:
- Sleeping Bag
- Pillow w/ pillow case
- Towel
- Toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, etc.
- Misc. toiletries such as contact lens solution, hairbrush, shampoo, etc…
Clothing:
- Jeans, long pants, socks, long-sleeved shirts, sneakers/heavy shoes for outdoor work (these WILL get dirty and may get paint on them)
- Pants/skirts/shorts/tee shirts for a week to change into after work (CA is very CAsual)
- NO short-shorts or baby-tees—nothing at all provocative
- Nothing with inappropriate insignia
- Light sweatshirt and rain jacket
- Socks and underwear to last a week
- Comfortable shoes or sneakers (not just flip-flops)
Miscellaneous:
- Sunscreen, insect repellent, hat
- Bottle for drinking water (the kind that you can open and close easily, like a bicyclist’s water bottle, works best as conditions on the work sites are often dusty)
- Flashlight
- Health insurance card
- Identification (driver’s license or some other photo ID)
- Any medications you may need
Special Equipment by Group (your group assignment will be sent to you in August).
Most equipment needed for the week will be provided by the CA program. However, participants in Habitat for Humanity and Martin House must bring sturdy shoes to wear on-site (work boots preferred, otherwise definitely bring old sneakers). Other sites might be painting & doing light maintenance work inside and out, so please come prepared.
DO NOT BRING:
- IPods, mp3 players or hand-held video games.
- expensive jewelry.
- any clothes that you wouldn’t want to get dirty.
- drugs or alcohol – both are strictly forbidden.
- a lot of cash (everything is paid for, so you really won’t need much.)
