Colloqium Information

The Princeton Chapter of the national Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is an organization that supports women in engineering at Princeton University and also dedicates time to encouraging younger women to become engineers. In today’s world where there are endless opportunities for discovery, creativity, and invention, building a strong work force of engineers is essential to moving new ideas forward.

Each year SWE holds our High School Colloquium in order to introduce high school girls to the field of engineering. This year’s theme is “Bridge to the Future.” Our goal is to demonstrate how a foundation in engineering can make anything possible. Engineering is the key to improving the world in new and creative ways, and the curriculum of an engineering degree incorporates so many disciplines that an engineering graduate can pursue any field in which they are interested.

Our activities throughout the day are designed to reflect these ideas. Girls in attendance will have the opportunity to meet other young women from around New Jersey and female students studying engineering at Princeton. Highlights of the day include a key note address by a professional women engineer, an overview of the different engineering fields highlighting the cross-disciplinary coursework, and an exploration tour of different engineering labs and facilities at Princeton. In addition, the girls will have the opportunity engage in group activities that incorporate ideas from multiple engineering disciplines.

SWE works in conjunction with area high schools to select participants for the Colloquium. Registration goes until November 7, 2008. Please email swe@princeton.edu with any questions or concerns.
