Nick Jones approaches dancing with great abandon and seriousness. Mixing formal Argentine Tango styles, he dances a creative, musical style that pushes the limits of the genera. He has been studying tango since 1998 with many maestros, the foremost of which are Norberto "Pulpo" Esbrez and Luiza Paes, Julio Balmaceda and Corina de la Rosa, and Mariano "Chicho" Frumboli.
As an enthusiastic teacher, choreographer, performer, dj and musician, Nick is invited to tango festivals and workshops around the world. His current partners are Rebecca Shulman and Amy Anderson.
The main thing about Rebecca is, a lot of people love dancing with her. Adam was kind enough to point this out one day. Someone was going on about how long she’d been dancing and her contributions to the tango scene and so on, and he said, yeah, AND, she can really dance! Because who cares if you’ve been dancing eighteen years as Rebecca has. You’ve got to feel good to dance with! Which she does. She had the privilege of dancing with a lot of wonderful old Argentine men in the 90’s, and in recent years she has somehow managed to keep up with the young men of her home country who are all so creative and challenging. In the last couple years she was amazed to find herself performing with Jaimes, Homer, Alex, Nick, and Evan.
Rebecca was born in New York, and started to dance tango here in 1991 with Daniel Trenner, with whom she began to perform and visit Buenos Aires. Her teachers from those years include Mingo and Esther Pugliese, Gustavo Naveira and Olga Besio, Tete and Maria, Juan Bruno, and Antonio Todaro. She has taught many workshops across the U.S., and at various tango destinations all over the world. She’s also been teaching for Dance Manhattan since 1994 and has brought many of her colleagues there to create a rich tango program. Luna has been running on Monday nights since ‘94 as well, and she usually DJs it. More than a dozen of New York's current tango teachers are Rebecca's former students. She’s also a co-founder of TangoMujer, an all-women dance company. TangoMujer has performed a host of different choreographies telling various odd stories.
Rebecca is a damn good leader and a yielding follower. Her style is twisty and stretchy and lightweight and passionately musical. She likes teaching musicality and footwork and all sorts of things.
