History of the Organization

The Thai American Student Organization (TASO) was founded in October 1992. Its first Officers were: Jenny Korn'96, Founder and President; Vatinee Bunya'96, Vice-President; and Art Sunhachawee'95, Treasurer. From the start, TASO's goal has been to increase awareness on the Princeton University campus about Thailand and its culture, people, attractions, etc. During our years, we have gathered a small group of interested people and held various events to promote appreciation for Thai culture. Our members consist of native Thais, Americans who were of Thai descent, and others who were interested in learning about Thai culture. To introduce Princeton to TASO, we have held several study breaks that featured Thai cuisine. We have also been participating in Princeton's International Festival, where we dance rum Thai (the traditional Thai classical dance), showcase Thai artifacts, distribute information about Thailand, play movies about former Siam, cook Thai dishes, etc. Other activities included: a monthly newsletter that highlighted Thai holidays and group functions, weekly Thai Table, and trips to a Thai wat (temple) and local Thai restaurants. We also observe several of the Thai holidays, such as Maka Bucha and Loy Krathong.
