About Us

Teaching Initiative for
Princeton Socgrads

The purpose of TIPS is to offer a supportive environment to the teaching needs of graduate students in the Sociology Department at Princeton University. We offer a series of workshops and various teaching resources to enhance students' teaching experiences.

Our monthly workshop addresses issues relevant to teaching. The following are some ideas for discussion topics: grading papers/exams, leading effective discussion sessions, teaching essay writing, teaching critical thinking, using new technologies in the classroom, improving lectures, designing a syllabus, evaluating instructor achievement.
We ask faculty members and grads with considerable AI experience to assist us in preparing the workshop sessions. Readings related to the particular session are made available prior to the workshop.

We have a resource library (with both hard copy and electronic components) to house materials of use to teaching in general, and to our specific precepting experiences at Princeton. These include a subscription to Teaching Sociology and other publications of interest. We also have a list of preceptors for courses taught in the past at Princeton to allow new preceptors to draw on old preceptors for advice. Preceptors are also asked to add to the library by sharing their experiences with specific courses.

We are also interested in soliciting opinions from our alums to find out what they wish they had known/learned about teaching while they were here at Princeton. We can use this information for both planning our workshops and adding to our resources.
