The director is the University official responsible for the Fields Center for Equality and Cultural Understanding. The director is also part of a larger institutional team that has as its purpose support of multiculturalism in student and University life and enhancement of the collegiate experience of students of color. The director acts as adviser and provides support and counsel to individual students and to student groups.

The director of the Fields Center for Equality and Cultural Understanding is a member of the staff of the Office of the Dean of Student Life and thus works closely with other deans and center directors in developing an extracurriculum consonant with the academic enterprise and maintaining a campus climate that fosters respect among all members of the University community. The director and office assistant work in a collaborative relationship with the Governance Board of the Fields Center.
