2-D goes Organic
Written by Kristin Fountain
Last semester in the most well-attended housemeeting of the year so far,
the members of 2-D decided by consensus to begin buying mainly organic
produce, milk, yogurt, and free-range eggs. We are serviced by Albert's
Organics, a company out of Kennett Square, PA who also delivers to the
Whole Earth Center on Harrison Street. We are spending only roughly
fifty dollars more per person per semester than we would otherwise.
Usually members get a refund of at least that much at the end of the
year. We felt that the greater health and environmental benefits of
organically grown produce was worth the extra money. Also, now we no
longer have to go to Pathmark once a week, a virtue in itself.
The produce has been of very high quality and everyone seems satisfied
with the change. The milk is an extra benefit. It comes from the
Chrome dairy in New Jersey in 2 quart glass containers which we return
every week. Though we continue to have the whole, low fat, non fat
debate, everyone's needs are pretty well met by the new arrangement. We
are looking into possibly buying shares in a Community Supported
Agriculture (CSA) organic farm at Stonybrook Mill Watershed nearby.
