The Program in Theater & Dance

Letter to Prospective Dance Students

The dance program at Princeton embraces a contemporary aesthetic framework. Each academic dance course encompasses technique and/or repertory along with dance composition and written components. The Program also offers courses in History/Criticism/Aesthetics, World Dance, and Africanist Dance Practices. Intermediate/Advanced Ballet is offered daily as a co-curricular activity and is taught by professional instructors from the neighboring Princeton Ballet School.

The Dance Program strives to integrate students' investment in dance as an art-form with other interests. The nature of the program cultivates overlaps between artistic and academic investigation, with emphasis on performance and choreography. At our annual Spring Dance Festival, a student in our program can perform in the works of nationally renowned faculty, prominent ballet and modern guest choreographers and selected student choreographers. The Program greatly values the development of original student work fostered through faculty-student mentoring. During the senior year, dance students pursuing a certificate have the opportunity to create original choreography for a fully produced evening of dance performance.

Outside of the program, many student groups, which embrace a wide range of dance forms and styles, offer additional performance opportunities. Students may also take advantage of New York City's proximity to attend many diverse dance performances.

If you are planning to visit campus, the faculty can schedule time for you to take one of our classes and/or observe rehearsals. Please feel free to contact Crystal Henderson-Napoli to set up an appointment or ask any further questions.
