Delhi Area - August'98 to Feb'99
by
Clive Harris
In the last six months I have managed to get out and spend
a few hours, every other weekend morning or so, to some of
the better known birding sites round Delhi. Attached are brief
notes on visits to four different sites: Sultanpur Bird
Sanctuary in Haryana, Delhi Ridge, Tuglaqabad and various
sites along the Yamuna river. All of these sites are well
described in the Kazmierczak and Singh guide to birdwatching
sites in India, published by Prion Press. Birding was
somewhat hampered by light to heavy fog each morning from
mid-December through to mid-February, frequently ruling out
the mornings.
Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, Haryana, August 29, 1998
Approx 7:00 AM - 10:30 AM
Only a small amount of open water in centre of jheel.
Otherwise, there was high grass, standing in water. I walked
about half-way round the perimeter of the lake.
Although I didn't get a large number of species birds, there
were some interesting sightings. I saw at least four juvenile
White-eyed Buzzards (Butastur teesa). They were quite tame,
and I got to within ten meters of one bird. I didn't see any
adult bird, though. In the open grassland I came across a male
Black Francolin (Francolinus francolinus) calling from a low
branch of a bush. Further on there was a flock of around 15
Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters (Merops persicus). It was nice to
compare Indian (Coracias benghalensis) and European Rollers
(Coracias garrulus) perched on the same overhead wire, about
50 yards apart.
I climbed up the new watchtower near the sanctuary entrance,
and from there got a better view of the small area of open
water. It was pretty distant but I could ID some ducks,
including a small group of Comb Duck (Sarkidiornis melanotos).
I also saw two Sarus Cranes (Grus antigone) stalking through
the grassland.

Delhi Ridge
I've made a number of trips to the southern Delhi Ridge
in the last six months. A good place for birds which
prefer drier open woodland. If you like Lesser Whitethroats
(Sylvia curruca) then the Ridge is the place for you; there
seems to be one in every other acacia. All but one of my
visits have been to the upper part of the ridge, accessed
through Buddha Jayanti Gardens. Once I entered through the
path off Willingdon Crescent.
October 24th 1998
Approx. 6:30AM - 9:00AM
Highlight were good views of a single Sirkeer Malkoha
(Phaenicopohaeus leschenaulti), a life bird. It flew up
in to a low acacia and sat there for about 2 minutes. An
unmistakable bird. Also a good selection of the commoner
migrant passerines.
December 27th 1998
Approx. 3:00 - 4:00 PM
Disturbed a covey of Jungle Bush-quails (Perdicula asiatica)
which crept away quickly through the grass. Otherwise
nothing else of note.
January 16th 1999
Approx. 2:00PM - 4:00 PM
Slightly overcast, but at least no fog at this time of
day. Cut off the main path into an open stoney area and
in one of these I found a Sulphur-bellied Warbler
(Phylloscopus griseoleus) feeding with a flock of
Grey-breasted Prinias (Prinia hodgsonii), Oriental
White-eyes (Zosterops palpebrosus) and a single
Common Chiffchaff Warbler (Phylloscopus collybita).
The Sulphur-bellied was quite pale underneath but had
a very bright yellow fore-supercilium and gave good
looks as it fed, uttering a distinctive "quip" call.
A very pale Lesser Whitethroat was also with this group,
also sporting a very narrow darkish mask on a pale grey
head which suggested the minula race. Back on the main
path I disturbed a Savanna Nightjar (Caprimulgus affinis),
which flew off through the brush.
January 29th 1999
Approx 8:00AM - 10:00AM
Entered through Polo Ground. Early morning fog, heavy
enough to slow down birding activity. Best bird was a
single Brooks' Leaf Warbler (Phylloscopus subviridis),
seen foraging in an acacia. Identified on basis of
greeny-yellow tones to upperparts, yellowish double
wingbars (median covert bar quite faint), pale yellow
on face, throat and upper breast, faint pale coronal
stripe and extensive pale area to lower mandible. I got
really quite good looks at this bird, but couldn't
really see a pale rump area.
February 21, 1999
Approx. 7:30AM - 9:30AM
The highlights were a Verditer Flycatcher (Eumyias
thalassina), perched on top of an acacia tree for about
half a minute and a brief but sufficient (for ID) views
of a female Tickell's Thursh (Turdus unicolor). The
rockier open areas off the main bridlepath are well worth
investigating, particularly if you can hear a Grey-breasted
Prinia flock. I found a Sulphur-bellied Warbler with one
group, and several Rufous-fronted Prinias with another.

Tuqlaqabad
This is an extensive area of rocky scrub, acacia
woodland and open waste ground in and around the old
ruined fort of Tuqlaqabad. It offers very good chances
of seeing birds which are specialists in more open, arid
habitats than, for example, those found in more wooded,
or wetter, areas round Delhi.
Saturday November 28, 1998
7:00 AM - 11:00 AM
I started off in an area of open scrub and acacia
woodland to the east of the fort. Came across
White-browed Fantail (Rhipidura aureola) and Eurasian
Wryneck (Jynx torquila) but little else other than the
most common birds. Next I went to the open waste ground
in front of the Adilabad fort, and found a group of
Yellow-wattled Lapwing (Vanellus malabaricus), around
forty Ashy-crowned Finch Lark (Eremopterix grisea), and
a single Crested Lark (Galerida cristata). At the base
of the fort I found a pair of Rufous-fronted Prinia
(Prinia buchanani), a life bird for me. I then spent
an hour and a half walking round the interior of the
Tuqlaqabad fort itself. Just as I was beginning to
wonder why I had lugged my scope around with me for
almost four hours, I got the chance to use it twice.
First of all I disturbed a pipit which flew up on to a
low bush. Looking through the binoculars, it looked like
a potential Blyth's Pipit (Anthus godlewski). It was
cooperative and waited for me to get the scope on it and
to see the distinctive squared-off dark centers to the
median coverts, confirming it as an adult Blyth's and
another life bird for me. Then a hundred yards later,
a Phylloscopus warbler popped up in a bush in front of
me. A quick glance in the binocs revealed a bright
yellow supercilium. The bird flew over and began to feed
on a collapsed old wall. I still had the scope out and
watched it, a Sulphur-bellied Warbler (Phylloscopus
griseoleus), for several minutes. Its not often you
get a Phylloscopus warbler in a scope view.
Sunday December 13, 1998
9:00 AM - 11:30 AM
Tried to go birding down by the river but got completely
fogged out. In fact it was very dangerous driving around
down there. So I headed back up to Tuqalaqabad and spent
just over two hours birding inside the fort itself. It
was rather slow at first, with a pair of Sirkeer Malkoha
(Phaenicopohaeus leschenaulti) being the most interesting
sighting. On the way back to the entrance, I came across
a Long-billed Pipit (Anthus similis), a really big pipit
and very distinctive in its dark overall coloration and
large bill. Further on I came across a Booted Warbler
(Hippolais caligata)- the face pattern, the tail and
undertail covert length all kept saying Booted but it had
a very long bill, almost like a Blyth's Reed Warbler -
suggesting that this was a rama bird, which some consider
to be a separate species ("Sykes's" Warbler, Hippolais rama).
Saturday February 13, 1999
9:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Fruitless drive most of the way to Sultanpur in Haryana,
abandoned due to the fog, so turned back and did two hours
birding in the fog-free Adilabad area just south of
Tuqlaqabad fort. I went in to the fort itself, on the way
through the park flushing a pair of Common Starling
(Sturnus vulgaris), the first time I've seen this species
in India. There were several singing Rufous-fronted Prinias.
When not singing these birds seem to spend quite a lot of
time feeding on the ground. Walking through the acacia
woodland at the back of the fort I stumbled across a pair
of Eurasian Thick-knee (Burhinus oedicnemus). Highlight was,
however, prolonged scope views of an Indian Bushlark
(Mirafra erythroptera). It had a longer, larger bill than
in the field guide (Grimmett et al) but I identified it as
erythroptera on the basis of overall coloration, face pattern
and extensive rufous in wing in flight, and spotting on upper
breast. Walking back to the car across the waste ground in
front of the Adilabad fort, I came across around twenty
Yellow-wattled Lapwings as well as the same flock of
Ashy-crowned Finch Larks.

Yamuna River
I made a couple of trips down to the river this winter,
including one aborted one due to the fog. In fact the fog
has made morning birding, particularly by the river, rather
difficult.
December 26, 1998
Approx. 10:30AM - 2:00PM
Started out on the NOIDA side of the river, briefly
birding a park. I was looking for the route to the temple
overlooking Okhla island. I didn't find that, but, just as we
were going, I spotted a Long-legged Buzzard (Buteo rufinus),
being harassed by a Black Kite (Milvus migrans). Stopped off
at the pool just to the southeast of the bridge back to Delhi,
and scoped a Rosy Pipit (Anthus roseatus) on a nearby canal bank.
Then I headed back over to the Okhla village area. There were a
lot of birds on the river today, including a large group of
sandpipers which included about 30 Pied Avocets (Recurvirostris
avosetta). Further down I walked out on one of the embankments
to scope a flock of ducks and found a single Greater Flamingo
(Phoenicopterus ruber) mixed in with them - quite a sight.
At the same location I found a single adult Yellow-legged Gull
(Larus cachinnans) and a female White-tailed Stonechat (Saxicola
leucura), frequenting an area of reeds and grass. I counted
approx. 2000 ducks on the river, mostly a mixture of Northern
Shoveler (Anas clypeata), Northern Pintail (Anas acuta),
Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula), Common Pochard (Aythya ferina)
and Gadwall (Anas strepera), with some Green-winged Teal
(Anas crecca).
January 16, 1999
Approx. 2:00PM - 4:30PM
Spent most of my time over on the NOIDA side. Walked out to
the small temple overlooking Okhla island. Spotted two
Striated Babblers (Turdoides earlei) in the floating
vegetation on the left of the bank. Anyone visiting this
site to look for these birds should be careful in
distinguishing them from Common Babblers (Turdoides
caudatus) which are found in the drier fields to the right.
I was rather amused by the sight of a Long-tailed Shrike
(Lanius schach) trying to catch a Common Sandpiper (Actitis
hypoleucos), and failing miserably. Walking back to the car
I saw a Long-legged Buzzard again, possibly the same bird
that I had seen some weeks earlier. Again it was being
harassed by a Black Kite. Spent some time near the pool
again and picked up a Graceful Prinia (Prinia gracilis).
Amongst the ducks, I had what seemed like a good candidate
for a female Falcated Duck, but the birds got spooked by a
passing Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus) so I never got
a confirmed ID on that bird. Back on the Okhla village
embankments, approximately the same number of ducks were
there as three weeks beforehand, but I couldn't find
anything unusual. I did spot a Streaked Weaver (Ploceus
philippinus) in the reedbeds.
