Our system allows remote sensing in two ways: sensors on animals, and stationary sensors and dataloggers throughout the island.

Sensors on animals, such as heart rate monitors, combined with custom software and analysis tools, allows the rapid collection and interpretation of the energetics of animals in the wild:

Spotted Antbird (Hylophylax naivoides) with 1g
heart rate monitor.

Transmitter designed and produced by
Sparrow Systems [Jim Cochran], Champaign, Ill.

Data from bird is collected remotely and analyzed by
our "Matterhorn" heart-rate analysis software.

Automatically detected heart beats
Our sensors push the limit of size and clarity, allowing physiological data to be collected on smaller and more remote animals.

Custom software and analysis tools we are developing allow analysis of this data in ways never possible before.

A comprehensive wireless data network allows us to monitor the island in much more detail and speed than previously possible. Weather stations and other datalogging devices can be placed anywhere on the island with communication back to the labs and to the internet.
