Results:

A whole new order for IC6! As anticipated, Anna Valerio won by far the sixth Iron Chef, with her fantastic gnocchi/red wine/fresh figs. Delizioso ! For their first entries, Laura Rossi and Riccardo did pretty well, being respectively 2nd and 3rd. Interestingly enough, in addition to the classic Taste, Presentation, and Match to the theme, a special category, the 'Italianess' of the entries, was used in the voting system and allowed to determine that Italian voters considered as the most Italian dish Riccardo's Tagliatelle ("like my mother's"), while Americans favored Anna's gnocchi.
As a whole, the Italian side dominated the competition, despite outsanding dishes on the American side. It is fair to say that the level of cooking/presentation has never been higher!

Prize:

A "Mama mia!" spoon rest and one pot of mustard for each member of the winning team.

Entries - Italian side

Anna V.'s Homemade gnocchi festival

A three component entrie: (1) home-made (4 hours!!) gnocchi with ricotta cheese, tomato sauce, basil, pepper; (2) fresh figs from the garden; (3) red wine "familial production". The whole set can be better seen on this picture.

Cyril's Viva Italia lasagna

The green-side is for vegetarian; the red one is not. There are five levels of lasagna with: one layer of Bechamel cream (with prosciutto for the non-veggie side), one layer of reblochon cheese, one layer of Bechamel cream (with prosciutto for the non-veggie side), and one layer of gruyère. The Bechamel cream was made with basil infused in the milk. The green top is made of basil and other herbs.

Daniele's famous tiramisu
Laura R.'s Pizzelle with mascarpone and cream filling

NoO: Yes, Laura: The secret ingredient was cheese! ;)

Riccardo's Tagliatelle al ragu'

Entries - American side

Jennifer's

NoO: Let's be fair. You may have noticed the absence of cheese on this item. Well, the truth is that, when you have a crisis at home with both father and baby, you tend to forget something. The mere fact of participating in those conditions earns you an honorific Sayre Hall Iron Chef medal!

Kelly's Cream cheese crostada with orange marmalade

NoO: For the second time, Kelly made something while not being able to be there for presenting it. That calls for another Sayre Hall Iron Chef medal!

Patrick's Stuffed Quail "Sinatra Style" aka "The Jailbird Special"
Rick's Italian Bread
Sara's La Dolce Vita Pumpkin Gelato and Maple Marscapone Zabaione Terrine with Caramelized Pecans and Blood Orange Merengue

How does an IC competition work?

For all of you who have been wondering for a while how an IC competition actually works, well, let's be franck, it is first of all a big organized -or sometimes (?) dezorganized- improvisation. However, five steps have always been, are and will ever be there: the discovery of the cooking genius of our fellow scientists; the oral presentation of each entry; the testing; the voting; and the so incredibly complex search for the new Sayre Hall Iron Chef.

Here is a small illustration of these steps.

  • First step: the discovery

  • Second step: the oral presentation

  • Third step: the testing (also known as 'let's eat!')

  • Fourth step: the voting

  • Fifth step: the crowning

Well, we don't have any pictures for that... Too obvious... ;)
