Utopian for Beginners
An exhibition of photography and graphic design by senior Lily Healey

The Lewis Center for the Arts’ Program in Visual Arts presents, Utopian for Beginners, an exhibition of photography and graphic design by Lily Healey, a senior in the program, on April 23 through 27 in the Lucas Gallery at 185 Nassau Street on the Princeton campus.  An opening reception will be held on Thursday, April 25 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the gallery.   The Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

Utopian for Beginners is Healey’s senior thesis project and her first solo show.  She is completing her AB at Princeton in studio art and art history.

“The exhibition works to illustrate my creation of a visual language around my work, as well as that language itself,” explains Healey.

Healey notes that her artistic interests focus on the concepts and ideas behind the creation of art and, in particular images.  “I am fascinated by pre-determined systems and algorithms in relation to the artistic process,” she notes.  “Utopian for Beginners works to reflect those interests.”

Two series of works in the exhibition rely on a process designed by the artist for transforming text.  Other photographs document Healey’s studio and desktop space as it changed and evolved throughout the year, revealing glimpses into the artist’s working process.  Additionally, she designed an accompanying book for the exhibition that functions on some level as a catalogue for the show, but which is also intended to stand on its own as an object.

The images in the exhibition were printed digitally on inkjet printers.  Most of the photographs were shot in black-and-white medium format film; the rest were created with a digital SLR camera.
