Orientation Adopted by a Sphere-forming Block Copolymer Thin Film

Color map of the orientation adopted by a sphere-forming block copolymer thin film following two sequential rotational shearing operations. Dashed circle at right represents the outline of the rheometer plate used to apply the first rotational shear; solid circle at right is the location of the plate during the second shear, so that the film within the lozenge-shaped intersection was subjected to both shears. Colors represent the orientational order parameter for the spherical nanodomain lattice, measured experimentally by atomic force microscopy (points), or calculated via a melting-recrystallization model developed to describe the shear alignment process (continuous background).
