Foldable Plate Structures

Abstract:

I will present two alternative approaches to the problem of designing a large retractable roof spanning over a circular or elliptical stadium. The first solution is based on an extension of Hoberman's angulated element and involves plates undergoing a planar motion; it allows the plates to move towards the outer perimeter of the stadium. The second solution is a double fan structure involving a series of triangular plates that roll along the edges and are connected by cables; its hinging scheme appears more suitable for large structures.  Both solutions have a single degree of kinematic freedom and could be used for a variety of other applications.
