4. MOAT

The bright orange, five-foot-tall “Mother Of All Triangles” (known as the “MOAT”) is provided by the Princeton Triangle Club.  Triangle is one of the oldest collegiate musical-comedy troupes in the nation, and the only college group that creates an original, student-written musical each year that is presented on a national tour.  Descended from the Princeton College Dramatic Association founded in 1883, Triangle assumed its new name in 1891.  Since its casts were originally composed only of men, the tradition of an all-male kickline was established and continues to this day.  In 1930, the club built and opened McCarter Theatre, which is now a Tony Award-winning regional theatre that still houses Triangle productions.  Notable alumni include Booth Tarkington ’1893, F. Scott Fitzgerald ’17, Joshua Logan ’31, James Stewart ’32, José Ferrer ’34, Wayne Rogers ’56, Clark Gesner ’60, Jeff Moss ’63, David Kelley ’79, and Brooke Shields ’87.

The MOAT was constructed for the organization’s centennial show in 1991.  Triangle regularly reclaims its enormous polygon for promotional purposes and use as a set piece in the annual “Frosh Week” show.
