88. Jimmy Stewart

Beloved Hollywood actor Jimmy Stewart ’32 served more than four years in the military during World War II as a flight instructor and bomber pilot.  Though 32 years old when the war broke out and thus unlikely to be drafted, Stewart was the first Hollywood star to enlist in the Army.  Initially rejected for being underweight, he went on to lead more than 20 missions over Germany and occupied France, rose from the rank of private to full colonel, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.  When Stewart retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1968, he was a brigadier general and the highest-ranking entertainer in the U.S. military.  He is quoted on the walls of the Frist Campus Center.
