Prolific and prominent author, poet, dramatist and literary critic Joyce Carol Oates is the Roger S. Berlind ’52 Professor in the Humanities, having taught fiction writing at Princeton for over twenty years. Nominated for a Pulitzer and Nobel Prize (twice), she has received numerous awards in recognition of her writing talent in multiple genres, from the 1970 National Book Award to the 2002 Carl Sandburg Literary Award for lifetime achievement, and has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters since 1978. Oates was the valedictorian of Syracuse University in 1960 and earned an M.A. from University of Wisconsin the following year. This quotation is the concluding line of the poem “George Bellows’ ‘Mrs. T. in Cream Silk, No. 1’ (1919-1923)” from Tenderness, one of Oates’ poetry anthologies.
