Philosopher and theologian Cornel West '80 was a professor of religion and director of the Program in African-American Studies at Princeton in 1993 when his best-selling book Race Matters established his prominence in the ongoing national dialogue on race relations. Recipient of the University’s James Madison Medal in 1996 and author of multiple books, articles and essays, West’s attention has spread over the past decade into the fields of politics, law, music and pop culture, including cameo roles in the final two films of the Matrix trilogy.  Having served on the faculties of Union Theological Seminary, Yale, and Harvard, West returned to Princeton in the fall of 2002 as the Class of 1943 University Professor of Religion.
