Policy Section: Employment

Policy Number and Title: 2.1.4 Employment of Minors
Applicable to: All Applicants
Effective Date: October 15, 2003

Policy Description

The employment of individuals who are under 18 years of age is strictly regulated by federal and state laws. In order to meet employment and safety standards, Princeton University employs only individuals who are 16 years of age or older.

Application of This Policy

Minors who are ages 16 or 17 may be hired only as casual employees, and their employment must comply with federal and New Jersey regulations as described below. No minor may be employed without prior consultation with the Office of Human Resources.

When employing a minor, the following steps should be followed:
  1. An employment certificate (working papers) must be completed by an official in the school district where the minor lives and be presented to the employer (manager in the hiring department and the Office of Human Resources) for completion prior to the employment of the minor.
  2. Time sheets must be maintained by the hiring department, which indicates the beginning, and the ending hour of the daily work period, including meal periods, and the total number of hours worked each day. These time sheets must be maintained by the department in addition to hours submitted in the Time Collection System.
  3. A minor cannot work in, about, or in connection with, the operation of power driven machinery, dangerous or poisonous acids or dyes, corrosive material, carcinogenic substances, radioactive substances, ionizing radiations, toxic or hazardous substances and construction work or within thirty feet of a construction area.
  4. In order to comply with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA), an I9 form must be completed and verified in the Office of Human Resources.
These regulations apply to the employment of all minors, no matter how short the duration of employment at Princeton. For more information, contact a staffing specialist.
