Stephen Macedo named director of University Center for Human Values

Professor Stephen Macedo has been named director of the University Center for Human Values, effective September 1.

Macedo joined the Princeton faculty in 1999 as Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor of Politics and the University Center for Human Values.

He studies topics in political theory, ethics, American constitutionalism and public policy, with an emphasis on liberalism and its critics, and the roles of civil society and public policy in promoting citizenship. He chairs the Princeton Project on Universal Jurisdiction, which has formulated principles of international law to guide national courts seeking to prosecute human rights violations irrespective of the nationality of the victims or alleged perpetrators. From 1999 through 2001, he served as founding director of Princeton's Program in Law and Public Affairs.

"I am delighted that Professor Macedo has accepted this appointment," said President Shirley M. Tilghman, "and I am certain that he will provide superb leadership for the University Center."

Macedo succeeds Amy Gutmann, who became Princeton University provost Sept. 1.

Macedo has authored Diversity and Distrust: Civic Education in a Multicultural Democracy ; The New Right v. The Constitution ; and Liberal Virtues: Citizenship, Virtue, and Community in Liberal Constitutionalism . Among his edited volumes are Reassessing the Sixties: Debating the Political and Cultural Legacy and Deliberative Politics: Essays on Democracy and Disagreement .

Macedo has taught at Harvard University and at the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. He earned a bachelor's degree at the College of William and Mary, master's degrees at The London School of Economics and Oxford University, and a master's degree and Ph.D. at Princeton University.

The University Center for Human Values supports teaching, research and discussion of ethics and human values throughout the curriculum and across the disciplines at Princeton University. Established in 1990 through the generosity of Laurance S. Rockefeller '32, the University Center was founded by Professor Gutmann. With seminar and lecture courses, public lectures and symposia, a publication series and the scholarly work of its faculty and visiting fellows, the University Center fosters ongoing inquiry into important ethical issues in private and public life.
