Mitchell named new master of Butler College

Lee Clark Mitchell, the Holmes Professor of Belles-Lettres in the Department of English, will succeed Edward Champlin, the Cotsen Professor of Humanities and professor of classics, as master of Butler College , effective July 1, 2003.

Mitchell has lectured and written extensively on American literature of the 19th and 20th centuries and the literature of the American West. He has a long record of University service, including serving as chair of the English department from 1993 to 1999 and as director of the American studies program from 1983 to 1990.

Mitchell also has been a freshman adviser and faculty fellow for many years and served as senior fellow in Rockefeller College in 2000-2001.

Mitchell's appointment was announced by Nancy Malkiel, dean of the college, and Kathleen Deignan, dean of undergraduate students.

Champlin has served as master of Butler College since 1995.
