Nugent named president of Kenyon College

Dean Georgia Nugent has been named the 18th president of Kenyon College, the Ohio-based institution announced today. Nugent, a member of Princeton's first four-year coeducational class and a former associate provost, faculty member and assistant to the president, has served as the first dean of the Harold McGraw Jr. Center for Teaching and Learning since 2001. Her Kenyon appointment is effective July 2003.

"This appointment is a great honor for Georgia Nugent and, through her, for the McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning, where she has provided such excellent leadership as dean," said Nancy Malkiel, dean of the college at Princeton.

The recipient of several teaching awards, Nugent has been an innovator in formulating and promoting high-quality teaching methods in the areas of online learning, alumni education, community auditing programs and secondary education.

"As a student, an alumna, a faculty member and an administrator, Georgia has had a unique opportunity to contribute to, shape and understand Princeton for the past three decades," said President Shirley M. Tilghman. "Now she will bring her leadership skills to one of the country's leading liberal arts colleges. I look forward to working with her in her new capacity and wish her many years of success at Kenyon."

A member of the Princeton class of 1973, Nugent earned her Ph.D. in classics from Cornell University in 1978 and returned to Princeton a year later as an assistant professor. From 1985 to 1992 she was appointed to the faculty of Brown University, where she won that institution's highest teaching award and was awarded tenure. In 1992 she again returned to Princeton as assistant to the president and a lecturer in classics. She was named associate provost in 1995.

Nugent has written more than four dozen articles and papers and two books. Her first book is on allegory and poetics, and she has a forthcoming volume from Oxford University Press titled "The Representation of Women in Roman Epic."
