Taaffe to present slide lecture, Nov. 11
Posted November 7, 2003; 01:44 p.m.
Abstract painter Philip Taaffe will present a slide lecture on his work at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, in Room 219 at 185 Nassau St.
Taaffe's colorful canvases juxtapose and interweave ornamental forms and patterns with energy, complexity and resonance. He integrates multiple patterns and fuses ornamental imagery from around the world -- Islamic patterns, Southern Italian grillwork, Japanese sword guards, '60s optical patterns, decorative Ethopian architectural elements -- and forms from the natural world: biology, botany, entomology, geology and more.
Taaffe exhibits regularly at the Gagosian Gallery in New York and has had a recent retrospective at the IVAM Center in Valencia, Spain. The lecture is sponsored by the Program in Visual Arts .
