Housny, Gurtas to perform 'Sounds of Islam,' April 23

Sheikh Ismet Housny and Yusuf Gurtas will present a performance of Qur'an recitation and Sufi music titled "Sounds of Islam" at 8 p.m. Friday, April 23, in the University Chapel.
Housny is imam of the Islamic Center of New York in Manhattan and a renowned Qari, or professional reciter of the Qur'an. The art of reciting the Qur'an is highly valued in Islamic societies.
Gurtas, instructor of mathematics at Suffolk County Community College, is one of the most prominent nay players from Turkey. The nay, a reed flute, is the main instrument of Sufi music.
The free event is sponsored by the Rumi Club for Interfaith Dialogue , Muslim Students Association, Office of Religious Life, Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students, Undergraduate Student Government Projects Board and Venture Fund. For more information, contact the Rumi Club .
