Events celebrate African culture, Sept. 30-Oct. 2

"Sankofa Weekend," a series of events celebrating various aspects of African culture, will be hosted by the Fields Center for Equality and Cultural Understanding and Akwaaba on Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
An opening banquet will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Fields Center, featuring a lecture on hip-hop culture by Derrick Ashong, a doctoral candidate at Harvard University who is also a writer, music producer and actor. The weekend also will include an African fashion show, a panel discussion on "New Approaches to Sustainable African Development," live African music and food. Tickets for the opening banquet are $5 and are available at the Frist Campus Center ticket office through 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29. Other events are free.
The event is co-sponsored by the Bildner Fund for the Advancement of Diversity on Campus, Undergraduate Student Government Projects Board, Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students, Venture Fund, Frist Campus Center, Department of Music, Program in African Studies and International Center.
