Book by Small earns accolades

Mario Small, assistant professor of sociology, has won two awards for his book, "Villa Victoria: The Transformation of Social Capital in a Boston Barrio."

He received the C. Wright Mills Award from the Society for the Study of Social Problems and the Robert E. Park Award from the Community and Urban Sociology Section of the American Sociological Association.

The book, published in 2004 by the University of Chicago Press, examines the relationship among poverty, community participation and social isolation in a predominantly Puerto Rican housing complex.

Small, a Princeton faculty member since 2002, also is a faculty associate of Princeton's Office of Population Research. He specializes in urban poverty, social capital, inequality and culture, and immigration.
