One of the country's leaders in research funding will give a lecture titled "Challenges and Opportunities for NIH Peer Review: Efforts to Maintain Its Strategic National Value" at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, in Multipurpose Room B of the Frist Campus Center.
Antonio Scarpa is the director of the Center for Scientific Review, which is a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the major source of research funding in the life sciences in the United States. His talk will focus on the history of the NIH, the impact that basic research has made on science and society, recent strategic changes to the program to keep it efficient and effective, and the role that peer review plays in the funding process.
The Center for Scientific Review organizes peer review groups for the majority of NIH grant applications and makes funding decisions. The center also reviews other grant applications for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Before coming to the center in 2005, Scarpa studied and taught physiology and biophysics at Case Western Reserve University and the University of Pennsylvania for more than 35 years.
The lecture is sponsored by the Office of the Dean for Research.
