L'Avant-Scène to perform Moliere comedy
Posted November 13, 2009; 12:16 p.m.
L'Avant-Scène, Princeton's French theater workshop, will perform Moliere's comedy "L'Avare" at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 19-21, in the Class of 1970 Theater at Whitman College.
The group, formerly known as L'Atelier, was founded in 2001 by Florent Masse, a senior lecturer in the Department of French and Italian, who will direct the performance. This is the workshop's 17th full-length production in French, and the first of a "Moliere Festival" to be presented by L'Avant-Scène this fall.
The play focuses on Harpagon, a man devoured by an all-consuming need to possess money because it gives him the authority to dispose of everything and everyone as he pleases. Through his money, he gains the potential for ultimate fulfillment, yet he remains incapable of moving forward.
The performance is sponsored by the Department of French and Italian. Admission is free, but reservations are encouraged. To reserve seats, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
