Five named to American Academy

Three current and two retired Princeton faculty members have been named fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. They are among 227 leaders in scholarship, business, the arts and public affairs elected this year in recognition of contributions to their respective fields.

Princeton's inductees are: Bonnie Bassler, professor of molecular biology; Nell Painter, the Edwards Professor of American History Emeritus; John Waterbury, the William Stewart Tod Professor of Politics and International Affairs Emeritus; Bruce Western, professor of sociology; and Viviana Zelizer, the Lloyd Cotsen '50 Professor of Sociology.

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences was founded in 1780 and currently has 4,600 members, including more than 170 Nobel laureates and 50 Pulitzer Prize winners.
