Proposals sought for sustainability funding

Faculty, staff and students are invited to apply for support for sustainability projects on campus through the University's High Meadows Foundation Sustainability Fund. The deadline for proposals is Friday, Nov. 21.

The fund was established to bolster the goals and strategies of the research, education and civic engagement component of the University's Sustainability Plan that was announced in February.

Two panels have been formed to review submissions and make award recommendations to the Princeton Sustainability Committee.

The Academic Review Panel is made up of faculty members and representatives of the offices of the dean of the college, the dean of the faculty, the dean for research and the provost. It will accept proposals for education and research initiatives, such as course development or support and faculty and student-initiated research projects.

The Civic Engagement Review Panel is composed of representatives nominated by the Princeton Sustainability Committee cabinet. It will review submissions for civic engagement projects such as student-led initiatives, campus activities or programs, and research projects aimed at increasing the operational sustainability of the University.

The review panels will report their funding recommendations to the Princeton Sustainability Committee, which will convey these recommendations to the provost for final approval. The Academic Review Panel will accept proposals once a year, and the Civic Engagement Review Panel will accept proposals twice a year.

Proposals for the initial cycle of funding this past spring were reviewed by an ad hoc committee of administrators. Those awarded funds included a sustainability curriculum for Outdoor Action, the Student Environmental Communication Network, a data collection effort on Lake Carnegie, the Forbes College Garden Project and the campus farmers' market.

For the second consecutive year since adopting a Sustainability Plan, Princeton University's on-campus greenhouse gas emissions have decreased. Last year, emissions declined for the first time since the University's energy-efficient cogeneration plant was installed in 1996 by a modest amount at nearly 1 percent. Emissions are now down by 2.5 percent since 2008, despite the addition of more than 360,000 square feet of building space.
